A relation has metadata and data.

Relation metadata

• Name
• Ordered set of (column name, column type).

Content of a relation

• A set of 0 or more rows or tuples consistent with the column metadata.

Relational Algebra operations yield relations

To define each operation, we have to give rules for deriving both data and metadata of the result.
